TGIF

{I wonder how many of my Friday posts have this title. Probably more than I care to think. Sometimes being clever at 6 AM is difficult}

Since discovering the world of fashion/style blogs and, more specifically, Anthropologie-centric blogs about 2-3 years ago, I have shopped there more than I care to admit. I do spread the love and shop at other stores as well, mainly because I think Anthro is over-priced and sometimes just a little too quirky for my taste.

09.15.11
This dress is going be a long-time favorite, however, because wearing it is almost like wearing pajamas it's so comfortable.

P.S. I have been minorly obsessed with the Anthro-blog scandal that has been going on the last few days. I was not directly affected thank goodness and I like to stay away from the negativity that this particular website promotes, but please remember to always protect yourself.

Baby steps

I am so envious of all the thrifty style bloggers out there like Jentine and Megan and Linda and Sal, to name a few, who seem to find the most incredible pieces at amazing prices weekly. The few times I have been thrifting I have a hard time getting over the weird smell and nothing grosses me out more that old used shoes. I know I should just get over myself, but I find that going to thrift stores is best when looking for Halloween costumes and that's about it.

I don't want to give up, though, because I know buying second-hand is good for the environment as well as the wallet. And I know there have to be some gems waiting to be found out there in the Houston thrift store market.

2011 08 consignment
So I thought I would try a consignment store first. Granted, the pieces will be more expensive than at a thrift store, but I figured it would be "safer." I went to this place during lunch on a working Saturday a few weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. The store was clean, neat, and well-organized. She had a whole section of Tory Burch items as well as designer bags. And quite a few ladies were inside shopping.

This dress was one of the 2 pieces I took home with me. I love the color, shape and fit. Now at $20 it wasn't cheap by any means but it was much less than any dress I could buy from J.Crew right now. So I will take it as a win. Now I have to muster up the energy to go to our local Goodwill.

In unrelated but still important news you-need-to-know-about-EE, I tweaked my shoulder doing Supta Kurmasana (Sleeping Tortoise) yesterday. The pose involves putting both legs over your shoulders and behind your legs while binding your hands behind your back:

I can get into this pose with lots of help. Yesterday Yannis did his usual push my left shoulder forward to get my left leg over my shoulder and head but I must have pulled a muscle or something because my shoulder did not feel right afterwards and I had to cut my practice short. I have been icing it and taking Aleeve and am going to see my doctor this morning. Hopefully it's just something a little rest will help. Getting old sucks!

It was mayhem

I have been collecting Target collaborations since this first one by Proenza Schoeler back in 2006(?). My sister and I were in NYC for Fashion Week in February (we actually went to 2 shows - Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta, but that's another story) and found the Target pop-up shop, which was small and crowded but manageable.

Fast-forward to yesterday...I mistakenly didn't understand the magnitude of the frenzy over Missoni, which is understandable since this is the most recognizable name that done a line with Target (none of my real-life friends knew about Calypso, or Patrick Robinson or Liberty, you get the idea). So I drove to my local T after yoga practice, arriving about 8:01 AM. When I saw that the parking lot was half-full, I knew I was in trouble.

2011 09 Missoni 01
All I saw were these.

2011 09 Missoni 02
Which made for one sad style-blogger. I am holding a dress but it was a L and I ended up putting it back (someone else naturally scooped it up).

2011 09 Missoni 03
The hubs arrived before I did and get get his grubby paws on some men's stuff (I talked with him when I entered the store and he was laughing in disbelief as he described the absolute chaos that was going on in the women's department. "It was like they were practically looting the store!")

So the scene at our Target was pretty much what was described here. And because I am just that crazy, I immediately drove to the next closest store and actually found some things. And I managed to get online and buy a few other things. So watch out for some Missoni on a post near you.

Pass the pink please

09.12.11
all item remix'd
top: Anthro
pants: Express
shoes: 9West
earrings: gift'd
necklace: Collingnon Designs
bracelets: Banana, Calypso for Target

Is it weird that I actually own 3 different types of pink pants? These are the only pair that are really work appropriate but I just realized this fact. I guess if you know me, it's not really that weird.

09.12.11
These pants have been with me for 6+ years. They are still in great condition and, thankfully, still fit well.

2005 05 ee joe2005 06 bj rehearsal 26
I bought them in '05 and wore them to a couple rehearsal dinners that summer, so they have a lot of good memories associated with them. I think I didn't wear them for a few years after but I am so glad I kept them. I guess building a lifelong wardrobe will include different types of staples for different people; mine will always have some pink pants!

Week in photos

Observations for the week:

2011 09 05 photo
Cafe Express is a good substitute for a coconut stand to get yoga peeps together after practice.

2011 09 06 photo
I really need to cook more at home. Better food, less expensive and we tend to eat less too.

2011 09 07 photo
I wish I had an excuse to buy this hot pink coat!

2011 09 08 photo
This face is cuter and cuter everyday. He is also going to be crawling very soon; I can feel it!

2011 09 09 photo
My closet used to have a floor, but somehow my shoes have multiplied. They are like rabbits, I guess.

2011 09 10 photo
Joe wonders where his pizza is. This is probably the smallest pizza we have ever ordered from Collina's, a local Italian restaurant.

A summer top for fall(ish)

09.08.11
top: J. Crew, remix'd
cardi: Target
skirt: Old Navy, remix'd
sunnies: Dsquared, remix'd
earrings: gift'd&remix'd
belt: Gap, remix'd
bag: Gucci, remix'd

The mornings are cooler these days - in the 70s instead of 80s, but the temperatures are still reaching mid-90s so this cardi did not last on me all day. And although the top has fall colors, it is sleeveless so can be worn year 'round!

Remix Week has been uber fun; thanks again to Megan and Keely for hosting!

A little fashion show

I wish I lived in NYC so I could have participated in Fashion Night Out, but I did go to a little fashion show on Wednesday night.

2011 09 fashion show 06
The show was held at Tootsies, a high-end boutique here in Houston.

2011 09 fashion show 02
Waiting for the event to begin.

The show was sponsored by Houston magazine and much fun was had by all.

{I will be posting my last outfit for the remix challenge later. Just wanted to go off-campus for a bit!}

Something new

08.31.11
all items remix'd except top
top, skirt, belt: Anthro
shoes: Seychelles
necklace: Francesca's
cuff: gift'd

I bought this top almost a month ago when I was debating buying this dress but this is my first time wearing it. Anthro makes the best knits - interesting colors and textures that are great for layering.

08.31.11
This is also my 2nd all-Anthro outfit this week. Yes I have an addiction, but I feed it very slowly, one sale piece at a time.

A summer dress for fall(ish)

09.07.11
all items remix'd
jacket: F21
dress: Loft
shoes: Geox
earrings: gift'd

Houston has had a scorching summer this year. Labor day weekend brought some cooler temperatures - 90s instead of 100s. So basically we get hot and less hot as our seasons. I predict I won't be wearing boots or layers or anything remotely fall-like until late October. The heat kind of sucks, but I take that over long snow days any time.

A lost/forgotten piece

Sometimes in our quest for new pretty things, we forget about the old pretty things we already have in our closet! Thank you Megan for reminding me to revisit the back of my closet.

09.05.11
all items remix'd
dress: Patrick Robinson for Target
shoes: B. Makowsky
sunnies: Dsquared
earrings: old
bracelet: Chan Luu

We spent all day yesterday with friends and lots of food. Oh yes, and a movie thrown in for good measure. The Debt was as exciting as its trailers and proved that you don't have to be a Megan Fox or Angelina Jolie to carry a big film. Oh, and I am super excited that today is technically my labor day and I have another day off from work. I guess I should do more productive.

An old favorite

I am participating in Remix Week with the ever lovely Megan and Keely. Please join along!

{In the interest of full disclosure, my outfits will probably be a mix of "real time" looks and looks from last week. But I do promise I have worn them recently at one time or another!}

09.01.11
all items remix'd
top, skirt, belt: Anthro
shoes: Geox

cuff: Tiffanys's, gift'd

I love Anthro but don't love their prices so I try to scoop things up when they go on sale. One thing I learned after discovering so many Anthro-centric blogs is that almost everything eventually goes on sale. Another great thing about Anthropologie clothes is that, for the most part, they last a long time and the styles last a long time. I don't feel like their clothes are completely trendy so anyone at any age can wear them.

09.01.11
I was having fun in my sister's back yard with my mini-tripod. The light was a bit wonky but nothing a little Photoshop can't fix!

blue sidestep skirt 02
I love having photographic evidence that, yes, indeed, I wear the clothes I buy and I wear them a lot.

Let me know if you are participating, I would love to see your looks!

Week in photos

Observations for the week:
2011 08 29 photo
"Po-po" (grandma in Chinese) loves her baby buddha. Can those eyes be any bigger?

2011 08 30 photo
Baby J is still the cutest 22 months old around. And why is it easier for babies to say "no" instead of "yes?"

2011 08 31 photo
The days are definitely getting shorter which makes for nice sunset bokeh.

2011 09 01 photo
We have a fun group of friends.

2011 09 02 photo
During our led class on Friday, Yannis played Sharath doing the count. I miss India.

2011 09 03 photo
The large tree in our yard thinks fall is coming even though it still feels like summer. (We did get some much needed rain last night and tonight though - woo hoo!)

2011 09 04 photo
I still need to perfect action shots of the hubs on his bike.

Quite the spread

2011 09 PR night 02
Our weekly Project Runway party was at our house last night and the theme was Indian food, of course. I made channa masala (pictured at five o'clock) and our peeps brought lots of other yummy goodness.

2011 09 PR night 01
We definitely quite enjoy Project Runway more when eating good food and spending time with friends. Our house is cozy enough for everyone to sit together to watch and critique as we go.

I like to put an effort into what I wear for a PR night but keep it simple as well.

09.01.11
This comfy sundress does the trick!

pink ruffle dress 01
It hasn't gotten as much love this summer. But it will be a keeper for many summers to come.

A change is gonna come

Happy September! This year seems to be flying by.

08.30.11
all items remix'd
dress: Tucker for Target
booties: Aldo
earrings: Collingnon Designs, gift'd
belt: Anthro
bracelet: Chan Luu

I have been less than inspired with my blog lately. While I still love wearing pretty clothes, even taking outfit photos have felt like a chore. I am not quite sure what I want to do, but I am thinking it's time to mix things up, kind of like Tabitha or Clare. And since I take a long time to do anything, this change won't be immediate. Please bear with me.

P.S. Any suggestions of what you would like to see or read are welcome!
