Why I am here

Yoga has different meanings for different people. Most people associate it with the asanas, or poses. But yoga is also a spiritual practice, into which I am just beginning to dip my toes. In addition to practice, I am taking a few classes: chanting, sanskrit and learning about the Bhagavavd Gita and Hatha Yoga Pradipika (yoga philosophy texts). Hopefully I will return home a better person than when I arrived :)

Yoga was my first experience with deep body awareness and I practiced it consistently for nearly ten years. I even started on a course of Iyengar instructor training, but then I had to choose between staying near my teacher and moving on to my first faculty position.

Yoga can be really rewarding. I took up dance when I moved to a place where there were no yoga teachers for miles around, and I have to say, I think any focused practice of a physical discipline can get you to the mental state that yoga aims for. But right now where I live so many of the yoga classes seem focused on that "hot yoga" thing that's more like aerobics. I sometimes miss the focused stillness of Iyengar practice.

I think you will come home changed, but I don't see how you can be any better! :)
