on the mat | right vs. left

Untitled
As with any physical activity that is performed routinely, yoga comes with its share injuries, at least for me. While most of the poses are symmetrical (i.e. lunge on right side, then lunge on left), some of the binding poses are not quite as much.

Lotus pose typically involves putting your right foot on your left knee then your left foot over your right leg onto your right knee:20/366.

Similarly, Supta Kurmasana, or Sleeping Tortoise, a pose I have been trying to master for 2+ years now, typically involves placing your left leg over your left shoulder then your right leg over your right shoulder: supta kurmasana.

Y, my teacher, suggested this week that I try Supta Kurma with my right leg over my right shoulder first. I have also been doing the lotus poses with the left leg up first. I did this twice this week and, boy, what a difference alternating legs makes! My a$$ has been sore all week and switching legs makes it feel like a completely new pose. Goes to show you how one side of your body can become more flexible than the other.

This has definitely been a humbling week in my practice. But I am happy to challenge myself in new ways. Now excuse me as I go take an Advil...or two.

Black and blue

Evidently I drank too much white wine at our friend's holiday party last night. I am hoping the Aleeve and cup of coffee I just ingested will speed along my recovery. I really need to drink more water before crashing into bed on nights like this.

The sleeves on this shirt are a bit too loose to be layered like this, but oh well, next outfit.

A movie filled weekend

This past weekend the old Angelika movie theater downtown reopened as a Sundance Cinema. We (including all of my friends) are especially happy about this because the theater is closer, doesn't get the throngs of masses and shows many independent as well as mainstream movies. Our first viewing there was My Week with Marilyn, which was a simply charming movie and Michelle Williams definitely deserves an Oscar nod for her performance.

On the flip side, I saw Breaking Dawn last night, which was melodramatic and completely cheesy. I had a good laugh and was entertained, I will give it that.

The other movies we watched over the weekend were The Descendants (Clooney was great; another good one), Midnight Cowboy (we like to watch old Oscar winners and this one was definitely interesting; can't believe it was rated X when it first opened!), and Soul Plane (this would have been much better with some chemical enhancement, but it was worth the $0.53 rental!). You know you are getting old when your primary form of entertainment is the movies! In our defense, the end of the year is usually about the time most of the movies worth seeing are released; we always try to catch the movies and actors up for Oscars before the awards the next year.

This photo makes me smile because I am laughing at something the hubs has said. Posing with the vintage Corvette was my idea but I am not quite the pin up girl.

Vacationing always throws a wrench in my schedule. This week has been a whirlwind of activity every night. I feel like I haven't yet caught up on my sleep, uploading vacation photos, reading blogs, etc. And don't even ask me how the house looks. Important stuff, I know. Tonight I am looking forward to good yoga practice to finish out the week and an early night to bed. You know you are getting old when a good night's sleep sounds better than a night out partying!

2 cups

One of the pitfalls of having tenants living above you is that sometimes they play their music way too loud, which really stinks when you have to work the next day! This does not bode well for my weekend work day. I'm thinking today is going to be a 2-coffee cup day.

One reason I love Anthropologie clothes is that many of the patterns can work well on their own without much accessorizing. This makes getting dressed on a lazy day much easier. {Note: I wore this outfit last week; today I will be wearing scrubs, which is the easiest of them all!}

It's quiet around here.

The hubs and I are early birds - he likes to run before the humidity gets worse and I like to practice yoga in the morning. We may sleep in until 6:30-7 AM on the weekends, especially if I am not working, but that makes going out with friends and staying up late harder. I am definitely more productive in the mornings but not so much if my head aches from too much wine! Needless to say this sometimes makes us feel like we are old because we are not out partying like we used to, but I, for one, can live with that.

I wore this on Thursday for Project Runway night. I thought it would be fitting to wear something made by a PR winner. Leann was one of my favorites -I loved her final collection.

I am looking forward to another relaxing day. Funny how time goes by so fast when you are doing a whole lotta nothin'!

This outfit was totally inspired by a kind commenter. I love the stark contrast between the black and white. Maybe next time I will add some brightly colored shoes!

Is it weird that I am getting excited about the next 30-for-30? I have already started pulling out my pieces.

Last night we fell asleep around 9 PM and woke up this morning at 5:30AM. And that sounded better than anything else we could have done. We are taking a quick road trip to San Antonio this afternoon for a wedding. I'm just happy I'll get to dress up ;)! Any plans for your weekend?

14610 days old

Wow, that seems even older than 40 years! I try to view every day as a gift and enjoy it as much as I can. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty about loving my life like I do, but really I don't have much to complain about.

Getting laid off last November was ultimately the best thing that could have happened to me at the time. I didn't have to work over the holidays and got to enjoy them instead of feeling burnt out and tired, like I normally do. I planned an almost-two month long dream trip to Mysore, India to practice yoga, which I never would have done had I still been working. I got called back to work In December so I knew I would have a job to come back to.

I am currrently working part-time and while not quite dictating my hours, my schedule is definitely more flexible. I feel like this has made me a better person at work and in life.

If you haven't yet figured out, today is my 40th birthday. Good grief, I definitely have mixed emotions about becoming a whole DECADE older. Aside from a few extra aches and pains that don't go away as quickly as they used to, I feel like I should be about 29. I am also hoping you can only tell my age by the wise look in my eyes, not by the wrinkles beside them :)

"Free breathing, with sound!"

2011 04 yoga 07
This morning I finished off my practice week with another class "led" by Sharath. Hearing him on the computer was almost the same as being in the same room. Almost, but not quite!

2011 04 yoga 05
For one, I am not quite as focused when practicing by myself. No one call tell when I am not "working at my maxmum," as Yannis likes to say.

2011 04 yoga 04
But I still quite enjoyed my practice, which is the most important thing, right?

2011 04 yoga 06
I am feeling a bit brain dead today from a busy day, so I am glad that I practiced early. I need to remind myself to take deep breaths throughout the day when I am feeling overwhelmed.

Last night we went to see a show...IMG_2157
Unfortunately Billy and the band didn't start until after 10:30, which is way past our bedtime, so we didn't stay for the whole thing. At least I did get to hear 2 of my favorite songs by them: Today and Drown.

I did enjoy a random date night with the hubs though. Apparently, we can't hang anymore. So no more concerts on a school night!
