adventure in color

2012 07 me 03
top&belt: Anthro / skirt: J.Crew / shoes: Seychelles / necklace: Collingnon Designs

Last night we saw "Shut up and play the hits," a documentary about LCD Soundsystem's last concert in Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately we never saw them live and now I kind of regret that. {BTW, the movie has nothing to do with this outfit, which was worn almost 2 weeks ago, except that both, to more are little adventures - doing something other than watching TV on a school night as well as paring turquoise with something other than black or brown).

I have been trying to be more adventurous with color lately - I love the color blocking from the last year. Two brights are always better than one!

Baby steps

I am so envious of all the thrifty style bloggers out there like Jentine and Megan and Linda and Sal, to name a few, who seem to find the most incredible pieces at amazing prices weekly. The few times I have been thrifting I have a hard time getting over the weird smell and nothing grosses me out more that old used shoes. I know I should just get over myself, but I find that going to thrift stores is best when looking for Halloween costumes and that's about it.

I don't want to give up, though, because I know buying second-hand is good for the environment as well as the wallet. And I know there have to be some gems waiting to be found out there in the Houston thrift store market.

So I thought I would try a consignment store first. Granted, the pieces will be more expensive than at a thrift store, but I figured it would be "safer." I went to this place during lunch on a working Saturday a few weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised. The store was clean, neat, and well-organized. She had a whole section of Tory Burch items as well as designer bags. And quite a few ladies were inside shopping.

This dress was one of the 2 pieces I took home with me. I love the color, shape and fit. Now at $20 it wasn't cheap by any means but it was much less than any dress I could buy from J.Crew right now. So I will take it as a win. Now I have to muster up the energy to go to our local Goodwill.

In unrelated but still important news you-need-to-know-about-EE, I tweaked my shoulder doing Supta Kurmasana (Sleeping Tortoise) yesterday. The pose involves putting both legs over your shoulders and behind your legs while binding your hands behind your back:

I can get into this pose with lots of help. Yesterday Yannis did his usual push my left shoulder forward to get my left leg over my shoulder and head but I must have pulled a muscle or something because my shoulder did not feel right afterwards and I had to cut my practice short. I have been icing it and taking Aleeve and am going to see my doctor this morning. Hopefully it's just something a little rest will help. Getting old sucks!

Something new

08.31.11
all items remix'd except top
top, skirt, belt: Anthro
shoes: Seychelles
necklace: Francesca's
cuff: gift'd

I bought this top almost a month ago when I was debating buying this dress but this is my first time wearing it. Anthro makes the best knits - interesting colors and textures that are great for layering.

This is also my 2nd all-Anthro outfit this week. Yes I have an addiction, but I feed it very slowly, one sale piece at a time.

2 cups

One of the pitfalls of having tenants living above you is that sometimes they play their music way too loud, which really stinks when you have to work the next day! This does not bode well for my weekend work day. I'm thinking today is going to be a 2-coffee cup day.

One reason I love Anthropologie clothes is that many of the patterns can work well on their own without much accessorizing. This makes getting dressed on a lazy day much easier. {Note: I wore this outfit last week; today I will be wearing scrubs, which is the easiest of them all!}

I used to think I could never wear yellow because it made my skin look weird. I think I was wrong, although this is still the only real yellow piece of clothing I own. I'm thinking I need a yellow polka dot bikini.

I've only recently started mixing and matching more unusual colors and patterns together. Being inspired by so many cool fashion bloggers out there certainly helps.

I am so glad it's Friday...been a long work week and I need another vacation!

{P.S. Blogger is doing that weird thing again by kicking me out every time I leave my dashboard so commenting may be problematic this morning. So annoying!}

As I mentioned before, when traveling for work I tend to get bored and shop more than usual. Put me in the middle of the Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale and all hope is lost. I was patient and bought a pair of shoes that I have been eyeing for a few months.

Naturally you can't (or I can't) just buy one pair of shoes. I had to stop myself from buying a 3rd pair of shoes. And of course, I have a few pairs in my online shopping cart...once I get going it's hard to stop.
